How-to-Report Identity Theft

How to Report Identity Theft

Identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal information through a security breach or other means and uses it to open new accounts or initiate transactions in your name. If you believe you are a victim of identity theft, report it immediately and take the following steps:

1. Review Your Accounts and statements to identify any fraudulent or unauthorized activity.

2. Contact the major credit bureaus. You can request that the three main credit bureaus place a fraud alert on your credit file. This alert requires creditors to verify your identity before opening any new accounts in your name or changing any of your existing accounts.

•  Equifax: 1-800-525-6285 or www.equifax.com
•  Experian: 1-888-397-3742 or www.experian.com
•  TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289 or www.transunion.com

3. Go to IdentityTheft.gov for a personalized recovery and action plan. IdentityTheft.gov is the federal government’s one-stop resource to help you report and recover from identity theft. Their website provides resources and worksheets to help resolve identity theft. Call 1-877-ID THEFT (1-877-438-4338) or submit a complaint online through their website.

4. Contact us if you believe that any of your BFSFCU accounts, cards, or information has been impacted.
